Taking our solar technology to the land of the rising sun
Fresh from setting a solar powered supercritical steam world record, our team continue to see great demand for our heliostat technology. After setting up in Cyprus, we're now taking our tech to the ‘land of the rising sun’, Japan. But it's not just our overseas partners who are benefiting from our solar expertise, this project is also making a difference to the local car industry.
Business beams with new solar cells
We’re working with Dyesol to help them become the first to commercialise a new, flexible, cost-effective kind of solar cell based on perovskite material.
Putting Cyprus Hill on the solar map
We've taken our solar thermal tech to a Mediterranean getaway, and built a field of 50 heliostats with the power to boil a kettle in less than five seconds.
Out of the Dark Ages: How solar panels might make blackouts history
Did you boil a billy for a cuppa this week? Eat dinner by candlelight? Have a cold shower? Blackouts are rare in Australia but this week’s ferocious storms in NSW caused loss of power to thousands of homes, including many of the scientists who work at our energy centre in Newcastle. It prompted us to ask: Will blackouts become a thing of the past as our energy sources change?
Keeping up with the Joneses: Who has the coolest house?
My Climate is an interactive tool showing thermal imaging of Melbourne’s City of Port Phillip, helping to inform household energy decisions.
2014 – the year in ten posts
From dragons to comets, and hot steam to bird guts, it's been a year full of sublime, and implausible, stories. Here's a look back at 2014 and our list of the top ten.
Australia should export more ideas and fewer greenhouse emissions
As a global energy superpower, Australia can and should play a significant role in ensuring that its exports contribute as few greenhouse emissions as possible. Exporting ideas, technologies and solutions can play an important part in achieving this outcome.
Electric cars: ugly as charged?
It is an odd thing, but whenever a new electric car or a ‘car of the future’ is unveiled it […]
Powering Australia using mirrors in the outback
We're making it cheaper to install and maintain solar heliostats in remote areas to provide an affordable renewable energy solution for the Aussie outback.
Soaking up the sun’s rays
Ever dreamt of charging your phone on the fly? Or thought about how the plants outside your house could power […]
Our solar team sets a hot and steamy world record
A world-first! We've used the solar fields at our Energy Centre to create what’s called ‘supercritical’ steam – an ultra-hot, ultra-pressurised steam that’s used to drive the world’s most advanced power plant turbines – at the highest levels of temperature and pressure EVER recorded with solar power.
