Taking our solar technology to the land of the rising sun
11th June 2015
Fresh from setting a solar powered supercritical steam world record, our team continue to see great demand for our heliostat technology. After setting up in Cyprus, we're now taking our tech to the ‘land of the rising sun’, Japan. But it's not just our overseas partners who are benefiting from our solar expertise, this project is also making a difference to the local car industry.
Putting Cyprus Hill on the solar map
7th May 2015
We've taken our solar thermal tech to a Mediterranean getaway, and built a field of 50 heliostats with the power to boil a kettle in less than five seconds.
Out of the Dark Ages: How solar panels might make blackouts history
24th April 2015
Did you boil a billy for a cuppa this week? Eat dinner by candlelight? Have a cold shower? Blackouts are rare in Australia but this week’s ferocious storms in NSW caused loss of power to thousands of homes, including many of the scientists who work at our energy centre in Newcastle. It prompted us to ask: Will blackouts become a thing of the past as our energy sources change?
Our solar team sets a hot and steamy world record
3rd June 2014
A world-first! We've used the solar fields at our Energy Centre to create what’s called ‘supercritical’ steam – an ultra-hot, ultra-pressurised steam that’s used to drive the world’s most advanced power plant turbines – at the highest levels of temperature and pressure EVER recorded with solar power.
Solar cooling for Australian homes
19th July 2013
CSIRO has invented a new solar air-conditioning system for Australian homes. This technology solution will reduce Australia’s emissions, reduce your energy bills and reduce our demand for electricity and gas.
Supercharging the future of energy storage
29th March 2023
We’re supercharging the future of energy storage with bright solutions from our Renewable Energy Storage Roadmap.
What gives Australia the best bang for our energy buck?
26th July 2022
Every year, we release our GenCost report with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). The report outlines the costs of electricity generation technologies.
Itchy, scratchy and unironed: Life before our quirkiest inventions
20th September 2019
Humblebrag warning! We're the reason you're not mauled by mozzies. And that you can put your money through the wash (not in the money-laundering sense). So how much do you know about our quirkiest inventions?
Lithium-ion batteries: what’s the charge?
7th July 2017
Although our labs have been updated, our research question hasn't: how can we get reliable energy when we need it? This is where lithium-ion batteries can help.
Australia can’t lose in the global race for cheaper, cleaner energy
2nd June 2017
Despite our sometimes heated national debate about our energy future, Australia is well positioned to benefit from innovative low emission […]
Insane hydrogen membrane – extracting the fuel of the future
3rd May 2017
We have developed a metal membrane that could accelerate the roll-out hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and potentially develop a new export market for Australia.
Eighteen04: Clean-tech start-up kick-starts start-ups
25th May 2016
We’re hosting Eighteen04, a start-up organisation that fosters other clean technology start-ups, at our Energy Centre in Newcastle
