Three years ago we ran a national competition, to find a name for our new research vessel.

Investigator  was chosen as it linked the then planned $120 million research vessel to Australia’s maritime history – Matthew Flinders first circumnavigated the continent in His Majesty’s sloop Investigator. Two people came up with Investigator in their entry, and we awarded them joint winners. Queensland school girl, Clare Cameron, proposed The Flinders Investigator, and Tasmanian-based scientist, Kirrily Moore, entered the name, The Investigator.

Last week, we presented Kirrily Moore with a LEGO® Investigator and we invited her son’s class, from Mount Stuart Primary School in Hobart, to tour Southern Surveyor.

We all had a fabulous time!

A special thanks to Alastair Graham, the Manager of the Australian National Fish Collection, which is located at the CSIRO Laboratories in Hobart, who loaned us some fish samples, to show the group the kinds of species collected by scientists on board Southern Surveyor.
