Bastard Red Cod: It is an ugly bastard but I’m sure his mother loves him.  Anyway, it grows to a maximum length of about 25cm and lives down to about 220m. It is found in the southwest Pacific including New Zealand, New South Wales to Western Australia and Tasmania. It is less common to the west. Rarely seen during the day and swims over hard bottom at night. The color can vary a fair bit from a dark reddish brown to a lighter orange. Southern bastard red cod have a dark outer edge to their dorsal and tail fins.
