One of our bright sparks picked up a Young Tall Poppy Award last night for her research in materials science.

Imagine if you could put a small device on your tongue and, within a few seconds, find out whether you were on the verge of the flu, a stomach ulcer or even cancer.

Well, Dr Cara Doherty is working hard on exactly that. By developing new materials that can capture and read tiny biomarkers present in saliva, Cara is hoping to help build a device that could in the future be used to quickly detect all these illnesses and more.

We caught up with her to chat about all things work and how she felt about being crowned the top pop.
