Forget fantasy football, fantasy basketball, fantasy surfing; here’s a leaderboard with a difference.

Over the next few weeks, the Hubble Space Telescope’s Facebook page brings you Hubble Madness – a tournament style ‘citizen science‘ activity to choose the best Hubble image (out of a shortlist).

What will emerge victorious – a spiral galaxy? A nebula? A star cluster? What about Comet ISON? It’s up to you to decide.

The Hubble Madness leaderboard as of 27 March 2014.

Luckily the tournament doesn’t include all the images captured by Hubble since its launch 24 years ago, or it might take a little longer than just a few weeks to vote for the people’s favourite.

Since April 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope has:

  • Taken over one million exposures.
  • Observed more than 33,000 astronomical targets.
  • Produced over 8,500 scientific papers.
  • Traveled approximately 3.2 billion miles by circling the Earth every 96 minutes – that’s the equivalent of more than 17 round trips to the Sun and back!
  • Provided more than 42 terabytes of data which has been archived.
