The New South Wales town of Parkes has two iconic features; the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope and their annual Elvis Festival.

“By bringing these two great icons together we get to share a lot of fun and science at the same time” said visitor centre manager Glen Nagle.

Visitors to the radio telescope enjoyed brilliant views of The Dish which was busy making observations of a pulsar orbiting around a massive star. The information collected is helping astronomers to further our understanding of gravity.

Equally, the Dish’s visitors were gravitating towards the biggest star of them all – ELVIS! – or at least his impersonators.

Along with the 2014 Miss Priscilla winner, the Elvises (or is that Elvii?) attracted a fair amount of attention.

“It’s great to see everyone enjoying these two big stars posing with the our own ‘movie’ star, The Dish” Glen said.

All too soon the Elvii had places to go and as they departed in their pink Cadillac, we were proud to announce that ‘Elvis has left the Dish’.

Thank you very much! 🙂
