The teams on board RV Investigator had been enjoying some relatively calm weather and conditions, but on Sunday the Southern Ocean started revealing its other side.

With the weather turning for the worst, the ship and teams on board have been hunkering down, sheltering behind Heard Island, while continuing to use the sonar system to map the sea floor.

The sonar beam used to map the sea floor can be up to 30 kilometres wide.

Here are some images taken by Pete Harmsen of the different moods of the Southern Ocean, some of the bird life and Heard Island.
