The RV Investigator team capture rare footage of Australia’s only two active volcanoes emanating vapour, and one — Big Ben — erupting lava on Heard Island and the McDonald Islands.
The teams on board RV Investigator had been enjoying some relatively calm weather and conditions, but on Sunday the Southern Ocean started revealing its other side.
Now on the second phase of their research program, the RV Investigator team have reached Heard Island and are now analysing hydrothermal systems.
The scientists, support staff and crew on board RV Investigator celebrated Australia Day near Heard Island.
